Bitcoin is trading to new session lows, bringing its 100-day moving average at $76,139 into focus. The low so far has reached $76,172, leaving the price just $33 above a key technical level that could help define the next move.
Sentiment has been unsettled by reports of an alleged Binance security breach. The account circulating describes $6.3B of assets being drained from wallets across multiple blockchains over a 20 minute period on Thursday, raising concerns about customer funds, exchange security and potential spillover across the cryptocurrency ecosystem. North Korea is being targeted for the breach.
Security scares can put additional pressure on prices when leveraged positions are involved. Falling prices trigger margin calls and forced liquidations, which can generate further selling. That process can magnify the initial reaction as traders reduce exposure and wait for clarity.
The broader backdrop also remains challenging, with inflation risks, growth concerns and geopolitical tensions weighing on risk appetite.
The 100-day MA becomes the immediate barometer
Technically, for Bitcoin traders, the immediate question is whether buyers can defend the 100-day moving average at $76,139.
The proximity of the session low gives buyers a clearly defined level to lean against, with close risk if support fails. Holding above the moving average would provide an opportunity for a corrective bounce, although buyers would still need follow-through to show that selling pressure is easing.
Conversely, a sustained break below $76,139 would weaken that defense and give sellers another technical reason to press lower. The low from September at $74,925 would be the next target followed by the 200 day MA at $73,112 and the 50% midpoint of the move up from the end of June low at $72,554.
The news is creating uncertainty. The technicals provide a level against which traders can define their bias and manage their risk. Stay above and the buyers remain in play. Move below and the sellers keep the control.
